CKD or Chronic Kidney Disease is a serious disease that is unnoticeable to people, who do not check their health status very often. Symptoms develop slowly and do not send an alarm that there is something wrong until the disease has progressed to later stages. There are 5 stages to the disease, from mild impairment of the kidney function to complete kidney failure. There is no cure to CKD, however the disease is preventable—by preventing diabetes and hypertension, two major causes of CKD. Also, its progression can be slowed down, even halted by controlling several factors—diet being the most important.
Who would not want to prevent their kidneys from failing? Most people, right? However, first you would have to know that you are sick and unless you have a very dedicated primary care doctor who strongly believes in prevention, you may not have had a blood test in a while, which is the quickest way to detect the disease.
The blood markers to watch for are: BUN, Creatinine, eGFR, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate and Phosphorus.
Don’t be intimidated by your doctor: ask away! It is your right to know what’s going on in your blood.
Even when the warning signs indicate the existence of the disease, it might be difficult to confront it. Denial is a very common reaction, and people may want to believe that the condition is not that serious and that they will have plenty time to address it. However, over time CKD is a deadly disease and the quicker you accept this reality, the better you will be able to stop its progression.
